The company had been operating from Karachi since 1928, which made it the second largest fertilizer manufacturer in the world after the Netherlands. It was one of the first firms to produce detergent and soap. All over the years the firm’s brand has remained consistent. However, recently it faced challenges from the other side. For instance, in 2012, a lawsuit was filed against its parent which led to serious losses for all stakeholders who were involved in this case, including customers as well as suppliers. This case also caused the death of two employees, although no evidence against the employees’ deaths was found. Another major issue is that it had an employee named Maryam Ahmed, she died due to pressure in 2013. She left behind 10 children and her husband, Dr Anwar Ahmed, whom was the chief executive officer, passed away too in 2015. Finally, it is difficult to control a plant that produces petrochemicals and chemical fertilizers. Although there are measures being taken by various government agencies regarding safety and maintenance of water hyacinths, problems of leakage and spills continue to occur. These issues have forced the firm to buy newer equipment and chemicals.
